A Charming Guide to Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston Walking Tour

Charleston is one of those rare destinations that feels perfect for almost any kind of trip. Whether you're planning a family vacation, a girls trip, or a romantic couples getaway, this historic Southern city offers a mix of culture, incredible food, charming architecture, and walkable streets that make exploring easy and fun. Founded in 1670, Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the United States, and its historic district is filled with landmarks and buildings that date back centuries.

We recently visited Charleston while staying with friends and cheering on my son at a weekend hockey tournament, and between games we squeezed in time to explore the city’s markets, bookstores, restaurants, and historic streets. It didn’t take long to remember why Charleston is such a beloved destination—every corner seems to tell a story.

Explore the Historic District

One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the Charleston City Market, which stretches four blocks through the historic district. The market has been a center of trade since the late 1700s and is especially

known for its handwoven sweetgrass baskets, a craft passed down through generations of Gullah artisans.

Nearby stands the impressive United States Custom House, built in the 1800s when Charleston was one of the nation’s busiest port cities. Its massive columns and classical design highlight Charleston’s importance in early American commerce.

Walk the City (and Its Ghost Stories)

Charleston is one of the best cities in the country to explore on foot. As you wander downtown you’ll notice the famous Charleston Single Houses, ornate iron gates, and colorful historic doors that make the city so photogenic.

Walking tours are extremely popular, especially nighttime ghost tours that explore Charleston’s centuries-old cemeteries, pirate legends, and haunted buildings.

Shopping & Bookstores

If you enjoy browsing boutiques and local shops, head to King Street, the city’s main shopping corridor filled with fashion, antiques, and charming cafés.

Where to Eat

Charleston is famous for its Lowcountry cuisine, and two iconic restaurants should be on every visitor’s list:

  • MagnoliasMagnolias – a Charleston staple serving refined Southern classics.
